Taking a class from Gwenn Seemel has taken me completely out of my comfort zone. This is good. I work from light pencil to dark pencil to pen, erasing some pencil, darkening pen, and possibly color . . .
Gwenn’s technique is no pencil, building colors upon colors . . .
Up early, still dark out. Foggy. Listening to the video . . .
I tried to do one of my missions. Can I stay in my comfort zone please? Buildings are so comfy . . .
Yech. Can’t make the break, tried to be too sketchy. So, I decided to do a portrait. I NEVER do portrait’s, so I can;t rely on any comfortable old techniques.
I used a picture of Mitchell I am fond of, him making a goofy face (he makes lots of goofy faces to make me laugh) which hangs over my computer. Here is my first pass, NO PENCIL, under ten minutes. Beards are hard. So are lips. Buildings are easier. I keep going.
I didn’t manage to capture his goofy look, but I can see the Mitchellness of Mitchell, and even he likes it. Gwenn you have a convert. This is a nice way to sketch, much more freeing than delicate pencil work, and just what I need to loosen up! YEAH! I am going to do MORE! I may even try a building!
My images/blog posts can be reposted as long there is a link back to zenkatwrites.
